Friday June 12, 8:00PM: experimental electronica/dance from Marsden Giolas and DeeMOn, @ Transistor
This event is Free & B.Y.O.B.
DeeMOn is Chicago native Chris Hess, a musician and owner of the label Garden House Records. He has played in indie rock bands such as Souljunky, Bellsize, and Soul Explosion Orchestra. This November, he will release his first recording for Garden House Records. DeeMOn formulates a uniquely intriguing sound all his own by utilizing homemade, vintage and modern instruments. While his music is rooted in traditional house and techno, it has an almost organic quality to it that is rarely found in electronic music today.
Marsden Giolas is a musician, producer, artist and DJ who currently works and resides in Chicago. He recently graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he concentrated on audio/music production as well as new media/video art design and development.He is currently producing experimental electronic dance music that has a tendency to fall within multiple genres. This blurring of boundaries and genres is by far one of his output’s greatest strengths.
Before joining forces with the Garden House label, Marsden released two extended players, two singles and one long player on Bandcamp as well as publicly available demo tracks on Soundcloud. He deftly incorporates the styles of intelligent dance music (IDM), glitch, ambient, down tempo, break beat, dub step and drum and bass into his music.
For this Transistor performance, Marsden will be performing his solo material from his latest releases.
Here it is! The first official digital single off of the forthcoming record by DeeMOn titled “Black Magic Radio”. A Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 burns an addictive bass line into your head as the 909 drums slowly build around it. Finally, the hook kicks in and seemingly sets up a very dark mood. This slice of Detroit style techno gives us a good idea of the direction the album is heading in. And we are really enjoying the ride. Have yourself a listen and if you like it download it for free!
Merely A taste of great things to come as Souljunky plan to release a series of three singles and eventually an E.P. containing all six a sides and b sides titled “The Dawns Are Heartbreaking”. Souljunky slowly progress this new wave tinged composition into full-on dancefloor psychedelia. We can’t wait to hear the finished piece. Enjoy!
We are more than pleased to announce the addition of the Chicago based alternative collective, Souljunky to our label. We look forward to releasing some amazing music in the months to come. Here is a message from the group’s website;
“It seemed a natural fit and hey let’s face it, two of the label owners are in the group. It’s been awhile since we performed and for good reason. We have been locked away for months and writing enough for two albums. Don’t get us wrong we don’t have lofty plans to make a double record. We have agreed to release to one digital single and two extended players. We will be going into some studios soon to record what we believe to be our best work to date. Garden House Records promises to keep you updated on release dates as they become more realistic. Until then we will be working on setting up some unique performances for all to enjoy. A huge thanks to Garden House Records and all the love you our friends throw our way.
Garden House Records is pleased to announce that The Soul Explosion Orchestra is back and it’s free for you and your downloading pleasure. “Get Ready People” had a limited release back in March of 2004 but still remains a fantastic listen full of funk, soul and psychedelia.
Street scenes and party noise fade to huge breaks and popping guitars while keyboards drift playfully about. These are a collection of songs that remind us of The Meters, Beastie Boys and blaxsploitation soundtracks seemingly at once. We know you’ll love it, download and take it for a ride.
Evil has never sounded so funky! Our very own DeeMOn will be releasing his first full-length EP with Garden House Records this April 28th. (Sorry for the delay :/) The sound of the album is taking on a unique sound all it’s own. DeeMOn’s creates his own home-made synthesizers and also uses vintage analog synthesizers, old drum machines and modern digital controllers. And even better, here is a taste of what you will find on the new record.
This is a track that Chris Hess wrote and produced back in early 2005. At the time, Chris began investing some time into ingesting his father’s jazz records. Some of the records that really grabbed his attention were the CTI recordings of Freddie Hubbard, Bob James and more importantly Eumir Deodato. A few weeks later Chris set out to make a purely instrumental track that embraced the sound and spirit of those wonderful records. This track that he wrote for his father was the result and it’s been made available for free downloads. Enjoy!
Arguably one of the best tracks on the Soul Explosion Orchestra’s debut record. A handmade CDs were released at parties and DJ sets with alternate out takes tacked on to the end of the album, this remains our favorite of three. Chris Hess’s humor really shines here but that funky summer vibe never lessens it’s grip on you. Definitely mix tape material. Enjoy!
